The estrildid finches are small passerine birds of the Old World tropics and Australasia. They are gregarious and often colonial seed eaters with short thick but pointed bills. They are all similar in structure and habits, but have wide variation in plumage colours and patterns. There are 141 species worldwide and 9 species which occur in India.

A bird in a cage is a concept some people find fascinating and thus there are hundreds of parrots and love birds sold everyday around India. What many do not realize though is that by buying these birds they are letting an illegal trade flourish that is killing lakhs of beautiful birds each year.

According to the organization People for Animals, Rosy ringed Parakeets are one of the most common illegally traded birds in India. Every alternate week the organization rescues these birds from trains and buses on their way to pet markets.

Ban on Export of Exotic Birds

As per the EXIM policy of India, the export of live exotic birds is prohibited except for Albino budgerigars, Budgerigars, Bengali finches, White finches, Zebra finches and Jawa sparrow. The Albino budgerigars, Budgerigars, Bengali finches, White finches and Zebra finches are free to export as per the provisions of EXIM policy subject only to pre-shipment inspection.
